Probably on a dull grey computer, while sitting on a dull grey seat, eating dull grey gruel. It's as if this game was made by some officious little turd in a dull grey cubicle, in a dull grey building, in a dull grey town, in Eastern Germany. Oh sweet zombie jesus these are fucking awful.

That anti-foot part of the game is the license tests. Then dips its foot into salt and sulphuric acid. Unfortunately it shoots itself in the foot. The only real challenge comes from controlling your car on the tight, twisty roads - especially as you progress to the powerful cars that will regularly spin out on corners if you are too heavy on the throttle.ДЄll in all - it sounds like a good game. Even the second place car is deliberately made slower than you, so races are rarely challenging.

The second place car (usually a named driver from the 'story') will stay close to you, but every other car in the pack will be left for dead. Unfortunate because the AI racers seem to be set to piss-easy mode. There is little to no rubber banding in this game which is both great and a bit unfortunate. In speed mode, you have a minimum speed threshold, and when over that speed you start clocking up points. In speed camera you are given 3-6 speed cameras to pass in any order in a set time, and your average speed through each camera is your final score.

And there's speed-camera and speed-mode races too. The race events themselves follow the usual types - time trial, lap race, point-to-ponit race, eliminator. Muscle cars are a bitch to drive around corners, and sporty little roadsters are great on windy tracks, but left for dead on the straights. They did a really good job with the feel of the cars. Some cars are back-end happy, some are slow off the line but beasts at top speed, some struggle to stay in control around fast corners, and some have so much torque that flooring it from the line will make you donut. There is a solid difference between the cars - you can really feel the differences and subtleties. A lot of the more obscure and under-appreciated cars made it into this game, including the Caterham 500, Ascari A10, Ariel Atom, Lotus Evora, Spyker C8, and Pagani Zonda Cinque (a wondrous beast to drive). This game is like peeking into Jeremy Clarkson's wank bank. It's almost a rally game in itself, but only makes up about 1/4 of the total races. The off-road courses are good, with twisty narrow bends and jumps n bumps to test your mettle. The off-road stuff could have really benefited from some rally style cars, or perhaps a little more variety. I really enjoyed the off-road stuff, but unfortunately you only get to race in selection of 4x4/SUV style vehicles. The ground is very bumpy, and you really have to watch how fast you go over uneven ground if you don't want to be stuck up a tree.

Although arcadey in style, it has a great feel to it. The surprising pleasure in this game is the off-road racing. There is also an easier mode with extra assists like racing lines, but we don't use that in these parts - we're manly geeks! I chose the next handling mode down, 'sport', which seems to give a little help reducing fishtailing without making it pathetically easy to drive. However, posts on other forums lead me to believe wheel support is limited. I personally found this unplayable on a gamepad, so probably only good for wheel users. It definitely won't be to all tastes, especially as you sometimes spend a lot of time simply driving around the islands trying to rack up discovery points or find a new dealership.ДЄs for the racing itself - it leans towards the arcade side, but has options to race in 'hardcore' mode where there is no assistance whatsoever.

If you're unfamiliar with Test Drive Unlimited 1 or 2 - then know this: It's a strange hybrid between social stuff, exploration, and racing. This will be a large 'mini-review', in that I haven't finished it yet, but probably won't either.
